With a great big playground that overlooks a wide beach with tidal pools and. This was our 5th vacation in the Kennebunk/Kennebunkport, Maine area and we’ve always had a wonderful time. There is not much to say about the hike other than that the trail has a slight uphill grade on the way out, is mainly smooth with a few rocky areas, and is easy to hike. We may be a bit bias but Kennebunk has some of the best Maine beaches. There is no trail identification sign like at other trails in Acadia National Park, only a gate with a Fire Road sign attached (keeps unauthorized vehicles off the trail). The trail is an old dirt road that leads to the rocky coast of a small peninsula. The magnificent beauty of Maines shoreline comes thanks in part to the large tides that wash against it every day. (An hour and a half on either side of low tide should be a good time to tide pool.) The Wonderland area is a popular place to tide pool-search for sea creatures in the small pools left behind by the retreating water at low tide-and the only reason to hike the trail is for this activity. There is a parking lot for the trail along Highway 102, and if it fills up, you can park along the road. Pristine and serene, this Owls Head treasure is located less than a half hour south of Camden and features rocky stretches that teem with small tidal pools. This is a sight you will not want to miss.The Wonderland Trail is located near Bass Harbor on Acadia National Park’s Mount Desert Island. Week 5, Friday: Island Quarry Adventure - Paddle to the Island or hike across a causeway and discover an aquamarine quarry perfect for swimming. On Thursday night, Campers will tent nestled in the fir trees on the shores of Blueberry Cove and wake to the sounds of lobstermen heading out to sea and the Tenants Harbor bell. Week 3, Friday: Monhegan Island Voyage - After a 10-mile ferry ride where birds, seals, and whales are often spotted, campers will explore and hike historic Monhegan Island! Secret beaches, the original fairy house forest, and an old shipwreck are but a few of the highlights! This is an adventure, not to be missed! After hiking the 8.6-mile loop, you can jump into one of the best swimming holes in Maine to cool off at the base of some of the falls. The water teems with microscopic life, trapped here. The pool has a short life of a few hours that is packed with change and action. Week 1, Friday: Paddle Boards at Drift In Beach - Drift In Beach has perhaps the best tidal pools in Maine! Examine baby lobsters, use the seine net to catch flounders, dig for clams, and gather Irish Moss to make seaweed pudding! Campers will also the explore surrounding coves on paddle boards.
